Galaxy Content management for public space

Galaxy is the platform institutions use to own what their installations say — for years, without a developer in the loop. It exists because the hardest questions in museum technology aren’t technical, they’re institutional: who decides what a building says to the public, who approves a change, and who can still make one a decade after opening day?

The ownership question

When a gallery interactive speaks, it speaks with the institution’s voice — and someone has to be accountable for every word. Most interactive installations dodge that question: the content is baked into the software, the software belongs to whoever built it, and within a few years the institution is negotiating with a vendor to change its own exhibit. That arrangement fails the test we hold all our work to: an exhibit is the institution’s infrastructure, so its content must be the institution’s to govern.

What owning your content actually requires

Accessibility as a condition of “done.” In Galaxy, content isn’t finished until everyone can experience it. Every image carries its description, every video its transcript and captions — and a dashboard shows, at a glance, where the gaps are. Content that can’t be experienced by everyone is visible as unfinished work, not discovered as a complaint.

Governance in the workflow, not the org chart. Content moves the way institutions already work: a draft, a review, a publish — with publishing reserved for the people the institution designates, every published version kept, and every change reversible. When we say institutions must own and approve what their systems say, this is the mechanism, not a slogan. It’s the same principle that let Genesis House invite strangers’ drawings onto its walls: at Manifesting Marilyn, Galaxy screened every visitor submission before it appeared, in the seconds between a visitor finishing a drawing and looking up.

Operations on the same screen as content. The people who run the content can also see whether each installation is up, when it last checked in, and — together with Starwatch — restart or update it from the same dashboard. A curator shouldn’t need a second system, or a phone call to a vendor, to know their gallery is working.

Where it runs

Galaxy is in daily use at the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, the Port of Long Beach, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute — institutions updating everything from building-wide galleries to 477 donors’ messages, themselves — and it screened every visitor submission at Genesis House. When the Cleveland Museum of Art needed a content platform of its own, built around its own collection and operated by its own staff, Galaxy’s core technologies were the foundation it was built from. The point isn’t the client list — it’s that every deployment hardens the platform the next institution inherits.

Why it exists

Spatial human-computer interaction treats the digital layer of a building as infrastructure with a 12+ year operational life. Content is where that promise usually breaks: a static exhibit is out of date the day it opens, and a system built for websites has no idea what a room is. Galaxy is the layer that lets the story keep evolving for the life of the installation — updated by the institution, governed by the institution, accountable to the institution.
